Where to sleep

Life in a château

Some places are rather special, and the Château de Jonquières is one of them. At the foot of the Larzac plateau, this superb stately home, classified as an historic monument and dating back to the 17th century, is ideal for a very special break. Situated at the heart of a lovely wine-making village it is today owned by François and Isabelle de Cabissole. Other than producing their own wines, including “La Baronnie”, they also have four bed and breakfast rooms each decorated in a unique style. Time stops here, in a park where superb plane trees, box, olive trees and other species grow. The former irrigation basin, which has been transformed into a pool, awaits guests, while the cool shadows formed by the horse-chestnut and bay trees, invite you to take a nap.

Le poète de l’Ostal

Jean-Paul Creissac and his wife Sylvie run the Ostal del Poeta, a superb 18th century wine-grower’s house in the heart of the old village of Montpeyroux. The two absolutely charming bed and breakfast rooms look out onto a lovely inner courtyard. In turn a wine-maker, poet and editor, Jean-Paul will undoubtedly take you down to the Montpeyroux wine cooperative to guide you through a choice of regional wines. He is the director of the publishing house Jorn, which specialises in Occitan poetry and he likes to chat to his guests and share with them his love of his land.

Where the river flows

In Causse-de-la-Selle, Fabienne and Thierry welcome you to their 17th century stone mas, surrounded by vines and the garrigue. Five cosy and simply decorated rooms, including a suite, await their guests. In the summer when the sun is beating down, it is lovely to go and cool off on the banks of the Bueges or Herault rivers, easily accessed on a private path from the property. In the evening, as you sit on one of the two terraces which look out over the valley, or in shade of the vaulted dining room with its fireplace, you’ll enjoy simple, sunny dishes all prepared by Fabienne, a true family cook.
